Accommodation
Generally, students have to choose to live either in or outside university accommodation. In both cases they will sign a lease contract for the required period, which may extend for one year or part thereof. Rents vary in Britain from one city to another. While rents are very high in London, which is the most expensive city in the world after Tokyo, rents in certain cities in the north are lower.
Students should read lease contracts very carefully, and not sign a contract unless they fully understand its terms and conditions.

University hostels
Students may have either a separate room or a shared room with other students and have their meals in the university cafeteria. Most cafeterias are happy to offer suitable food for Muslim students. Living in university accommodation provides easy access to the library, lecture rooms, laboratories and sports activity centres, and enables the student to participate in different sports, cultural and social activities. Some universities provide accommodation for married students; interested students should apply early due to the intense competition for these places. Also, certain universities provide accommodation for female students only.

External accommodation
This involves living in either a flat, a house or with a host family. This last choice is most suitable for students studying English language. They may have a private room, probably with a separate bathroom.
External accommodation requires the use of public transport, the cost of which varies from one place to another. Transport in London is very expensive, especially the underground. However, students may benefit from reduced fares. As for food, the cost depends on the consumption patterns of each person/family.
Students choosing to live with a host family should be aware that the main reason for which such families host foreign students is financial. Therefore, students should observe certain matters to reflect a good image of the Omani students, namely:
-
Respect the privacy of the house and do not invite friends except by permission of the host family.
-
Respect meal times, and tell the host family if you are not coming home or coming home late.
-
Observe cleanliness and politeness at all times.
-
Ask permission before using electrical appliances, e.g. washing machine.
-
Do not use water wastefully.
-
Build a good relationship with the host family by helping around the house in simple ways.
-
Should a disagreement with the host family arise, seek help from the university without offending the family.
