Opening a bank account
Immediately after arrival, students must open a bank account with one of the banks near to their educational institution or accommodation into which monthly allowances will be transferred. Until such time, students are advised to carry on their person an amount no greater than £1000 or a valid credit card under an account in the Sultanate. Below are the steps and procedures adopted by British banks in general, though some banks have special conditions.
Required documents
-
A letter from the educational institution attesting that the student is enrolled as a full time student, and indicating the duration of his course of study. Such letter can be obtained from the International Office or the Admission Office at the university after providing them with the name of the relevant bank.
-
Passport
-
Certain banks may require the student full address in the Sultanate, which is usually found in the admission form.
-
The student’s full address in Britain will also be required; and certain banks may ask for the lease contract or electricity, gas and water bill.
-
Also, students may be required to submit a certificate from the Cultural Mission. However, such documents are not required always by all banks.
Within a week the student will be provided with a credit card or an ATM card, as well as a cheque book. Also, within a short period, he will be provided with a credit/ATM card PIN. Therefore, students should not carry large amounts of cash. Nevertheless, they should keep a little amount in cash to meet small payments in case their credit card does not work for one reason or another.
